Next Tuesday, Real Madrid will travel to Westfalenstadion to play against Borussia Dortmund for the second leg of the UEFA Champions League Quarter-finals. The home side are clearly in disadvantage after the 3-0 defeat at Madrid last Wednesday. Deprived of some of their most important players, as Lewandowski, Subotic and Gundogan, Dortmund looked somewhat fragile on the first leg clash against Real Madrid. There was a lack of connection between the German side’s lines in the field and not even the immense quality of Mkhitaryan and Marco Reus managed to ease that disconnection. Jürgen Klopp experimented with different tactical approaches throughout the match and ended up in a 4-4-2 scheme with Reus lurking behind Aubameyang in order to apply some more pressure in Los Blancos’ defence line.
For next Tuesday’s match, the German manager will have still plenty of things to consider before deciding who will be part of the starting line-up, since he will not be able to count on Neven Subotic, Jakub Blaszczykowski, Marcel Schmelzer, Sven Bender, and Ilkay Gündogan, all injured, and on the team’s captain Sebastian Kehl, who is suspended.
On the other hand, Real Madrid are certainly more confident for next Tuesday’s clash at Dortmund. Los Blancos have a comfortable three goal margin and it is not likely that the home side will be able score four or even three goals without at least conceding one to a very organized team such as Real Madrid.
On the Santiago Bernabéu’s match, Carlo Ancelotti placed Isco as an advanced playmaker instead of the injured Di Maria and the Spanish talented midfielder responded with class. He scored a goal and had a key role in his team’s attacking movements. However, the Argentinian versatile midfielder is back in action after being struck by a stomach bug and he might claim his place in the team once again.
The Italian manager will not be able to count on the experienced Brazilian left back Marcelo, who is still struggling with a hamstring injury, with Jesé, who has been submitted to surgery once again, and with Arbeloa and Khedira, both of them recovering from the severe injuries that struck them this season.
It will definitely going to be a very difficult game for Borussia Dortmund; however, an early goal could offer them a thin line of hope and apply some pressure on Real Madrid.
