Next Tuesday, 15th of March 2016, the former European Cup champions, PSV Eindhoven, will visit the Spanish capital city to measure forces with Atlético Madrid at the emblematic Vicente Calderón for the second-leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.
After a solid win at Mestalla two weeks ago, Atlético Madrid showed once again what they are made of as they outclassed Deportivo de La Coruña at Vicente Calderón last time out.
Los Colchoneros are going through an impressive moment and last Saturday they showed no mercy to a fragile Depor. The team’s top scorer Antoine Griezmann contributed with his 16th goal of the season for Atlético’s 3-0 win.
Atlético’s goalkeeper, Jan Oblak, managed once again to keep a clean sheet and he is now dangerously close to overcoming Paco Liaño’s record from 1993-94, when the former Deportivo de La Coruña Spanish goalie only conceded 18 goals in 38 rounds.
The upcoming fixture against PSV is of the utmost importance for Diego Simeone’s men, especially after the goalless draw from the first-leg match at Eindhoven. Atlético cannot p concede any early goals, otherwise they will certainly need to dig very deep in order to book a place in the next round of the tournament. For next Tuesday’s match, “El Cholo” Simeone will not be able to rely on the services of Stefan Savic and Tiago, who are both sidelined due to injury.
As for the Dutch team, PSV are also going through a very positive moment and they are currently leading their country’s Eredivisie, one point ahead of Ajax.
Phillip Cocu’s men were only defeated once in the Dutch league so far this season and, last weekend, after a solid 3-0 away win over Groningen, they were held to a draw by Heerenveen, but benefited from Ajax’s home slip up against NEC Nijmegen, thus maintaining their advantage at the top of the table.
For next Tuesday’s important match at Calderón, Phillip Cocu will not be able to rely on the services of the versatile Uruguayan forward Gastón Pereiro, who was sent off in the first-leg clash at Eindhoven. Andrés Guardado, who is still recovering from injury, is in doubt out there.
