Next Tuesday, 29th of September 2015. the two-time European champions FC Porto will measure forces with Chelsea at Estádio do Dragão for the second round of the UEFA Champions League group stage.
After a fantastic win over their all-time rivals of SL Benfica last weekend, with a late goal from the newcomer André André, FC Porto weren’t able to grant the three points during their visit to Moreira de Cónegos last Friday night. Julen Lopetegui’s men put up a bland and unconvincing display while also exposing, once more, their immense defensive frailties. The Brazilian centre back Maicon opened the score with a phenomenal and well-placed shot from a long distance free-kick but early after the break Moreirense leveled the scoreboard thanks to an amazing solo effort by the Portuguese wonderkid Iuri Medeiros, who is currently on loan from Sporting CP. FC Porto lifted their heads and got in the lead again after the Mexican newcomer Jesus Corona scored the team’s second goal and his second in the league since he joined the team in the last days of the summer transfer window.
FC Porto’s defensive line was, however, caught sleeping on the job once again on the dying moments of the match, when after a Sagna’s cross from the right side, André Fontes headed the ball home and clinched the final 2-2.
For next Tuesday’s important clash against Chelsea, Julen Lopetegui will probably not be able to rely on the services of the talented Algerian attacking midfielder Yacine Brahimi, who suffered an injury at Moreira de Cónegos last Friday. The team’s captain, Maicon, is also in doubt for the match due to a minor injury.
As for Chelsea, the current English champions continue with their disgraceful season start at the EPL. José Mourinho’s men failed to grant their second league win in a row after a disappointing 2-2 draw a St James’ Park last Saturday. The Blues were down 2-0 but managed somehow to pull an almost epic comeback in the last fifteen minutes of the match. The Portuguese manager wasn’t by any means happy with his side’s performance after the match and he was certainly concerned with the poor defensive skills that Chelsea exhibited for the hundredth time this season.
Next Tuesday’s match will be a special one for José Mourinho, who won the first international major trophy of his career with FC Porto twelve years ago.
