Next Tuesday, 29th of September 2015, the current La Liga and European champions, Barcelona, will entertain Bayer Leverkusen at the emblematic Camp Nou for round 2 of the UEFA Champions League group stage.
The epic defeat at Los Balaídos against Celta de Vigo in the middle of the week has opened some deep wounds in Luis Enrique’s Barcelona. The Asturian born manager highlighted at the end of the match that at least Barça had lost to a team that knows how to play football, but the Catalan side definitely needs to understand and to interiorize what went wrong in the last night of summer in Galicia if they want to achieve the same successful standards they attained last season.
Last Saturday, Barcelona struggled to overcome a well organized UD Las Palmas at Camp Nou, but in the end, they did manage to secure a narrow 2-1 win. It was another atypical match for the Blaugranas, who missed a penalty in the second-half (Neymar wasn’t able to cope with the pressure) and, worst of all, saw Messi leaving the match very early due to a knee ligament injury that will probably keep him sidelined for about eight weeks.
Things haven’t been easy for Barcelona so far this season both in La Liga and in the Champions League. After a 1-1 draw in Rome for the tournament’s opening round, Barça need now to grant the three points against Bayer Leverkusen, who definitely don’t have the best of memories from Camp Nou, since they were heavily hammered the last time they played against Barcelona at that venue.
As for the German side, Bayer Leverkusen are not having to best of starts at the Bundesliga, as they’ve been already defeated three times in seven matches so far this season. After being smashed at Signal Iduna Park by Borussia Dortmund one week ago, Bayer Leverkusen managed to bounce back and are now on a positive streak with two wins in their respective matches. Last Saturday, Roger Schmidt’s men snatched a splendid win at the Weserstadion against Werder Bremen and are now on the 5th place of the table with 12 points from seven matches.
