Next Wednesday, 30th of September 2015, a highly motivated Manchester United will measure forces with the German Super Cup winners VfL Wolfsburg at Old Trafford for the second round of the UEFA Champions League group stage.
David de Gea, Memphis Depay, Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Anthony Martial are probably the reason why United have been slowly getting back on track and the ones to blame for the Red Devils being currently at the top of the English Premier League table.
Last weekend, Manchester United put up an overall quality performance when they hosted Sunderland at a packed Old Trafford, thus securing their fifth win in seven league matches so far. The Red Devils won the match by 3-0 with goals from Depay, Rooney and Mata and changed places with their neighbours of Manchester City, who conceded their second consecutive defeat last weekend, at the top of the table.
Next Wednesday, Louis Van Gaal’s men will play their second UEFA Champions League group stage match after being defeated at Holland by PSV in their Group B opening match. There is no room for mistakes at this stage of the tournament and a negative result against VfL Wolfsburg next Wednesday could leave them on a tight situation.
Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo will miss the upcoming match at Old Trafford, since they are currently due to injury.
As for the German side, VfL Wolfsburg are having a positive season start and their win over Bayern Munich for the German Super Cup final cannot go unnoticed. Nevertheless, their current campaign at the Bundesliga has been far from easy. Three draws and one defeat in seven matches are probably not what Dieter Hecking had in mind but the departures of Kevin de Bruyne and Ivan Perisic have in a way left an empty void in the team that the newcomer Julian Draxler can’t easily fulfil on his own.
After being heavily hammered by Bayern Munich last week, Die Wölfe weren’t able to return to wins over the weekend and ended up by conceding a home draw against Hannover 96.
The only time VfL Wolfsburg visited Old Trafford was six years ago, in 2009, also for a UEFA Champions League group stage match, and back then they were defeated by 2-1.
