Next Tuesday, 23rd of February 2016, the two-time European champions Juventus will measure forces with the powerful Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich at Juventus Stadium in Turin for the first-leg match of the 1/8 finals of the UEFA Champions League.
After a splendid win over Napoli in the last round of the Serie A, Juventus weren’t able to grab anything better than a goalless draw during their visit to Emilia-Romagna last time out.
Bologna showed once again how strong they are under Roberto Donadoni’s helm and they held the current Italian champions to a draw. It was a very entertaining match with both teams constantly looking to score, but in the end, both Gianluigi Buffon and Antonio Mirante kept their nets safe.
Juventus, who seemed to have their minds set on next Tuesday’s match against Bayern Munich, are now risking to drop from the first place of the table if Napoli manage to overcome AC Milan at San Paoli next Monday night. For the important fixture against the German champions, Massimiliano Allegri will not be able to rely on the services of Martin Cárceres, who will miss the rest of the season due to an Achilles’ tendon injury. Alex Sandro, Chiellini and Asamoah, who are still struggling with their respective injuries, are in doubt out there.
As for Bayern Munich, the Bundesliga champions were in a way caught by surprise by a mighty Darmstadt last Saturday at Allianz Arena. The Bundesliga’s newcomers put up an almost flawless performance in the first-half and went to the break leading by 1-0. Pep Guardiola, who was the target of the supporters’ criticism throughout the match, rallied the troops during the break and Bayern Munich controlled the second-half and scored three goals, two by Thomas Müller and a late one by the usual suspect Robert Lewandowski.
The last time Bayern Munich were defeated in a competitive match was back in December when the Bavarian team succumbed at the expense of Borussia Moenchengladbach by 3-1.
For next Tuesday’s important clash at Turin, Pep Guardiola will not be able to rely on the services of Holger Badstuber, Javi Martinez and Jérome Boateng, who remain sidelined due to injury.
