Next Saturday, 28th of May 2016, the all-time Madrid rivals Real and Atlético will measure forces at Stadio San Siro in Milan for the UEFA Champions League final.
Real Madrid will once again meet Los Colchoneros in the UEFA Champions League final after both sides went head-to-head in Lisbon in 2014 at Estádio da Luz. Back in that season, Los Blancos won the match after extra-time by 4-1 and they are certainly hoping to repeat such deed next weekend.
Real Madrid failed to win La Liga once again this season; although they did defeat Deportivo de La Coruña in the final day of the competition, their title contenders Barcelona clawed the three points on their visit to Granada and lifted the trophy. Zinedine Zidane’s men put up an historic comeback to win their last 12 league matches, but in the end it was not enough to win La Liga for the 33th time.
As for the UEFA Champions League, Real Madrid clawed a place in San Siro’s final after overcoming Manchester City by a narrow one goal margin, thanks to their home 1-0 win early this month. An own goal from Brazilian defensive midfielder Fernando was enough for Los Blancos to return to the competition final after missing last year’s match.
For the upcoming match against Los Colchoneros, Zinedine Zidane will not be able to rely on the services of his fellow countryman Raphael Varane, who is sidelined due to injury. Cristiano Ronaldo is still struggling with a thigh injury, but he will probably recover in time for the match.
As for Atlético Madrid, the Colchoneros have showed no mercy to the all-powerful Bayern Munich to claw a place in the UEFA Champions League final. After a 1-0 win at Vicente Calderón, Atlético ended up defeated by 2-1 at Germany, but Antoine Griezmann away goal allowed them to walk through in the competition.
Los Colchoneros enormous effort in that particular match cost them a painful defeat at the Comunidad Valenciana against Levante and subsequently were out of the title race with just one match to go before the end of the season.
For the upcoming final against their all-time rivals Real Madrid, Diego “El Cholo” Simeone will probably still not be able to rely on the services of Jesus Gamez, who is still recovering from a thigh injury.
