Next Monday, 13th of July 2015, a super motivated Mexico will go head-to-head with Guatemala at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale on what will be match number 12 of the 2015 edition of the Gold Cup.
Mexico have already left their disappointing Copa America’s stint behind and the match against Cuba was the living proof of exactly that. El Tricolor smashed the modest Cuban side by 6-0 but could have even scored far more goals than that. Mexico had no more no less than 32 goal attempts and placed 13 shots on goal. Miguel Herrera’s men weren’t by any means complacent in their Gold Cup opening match against Cuba, as they were already winning 4-0 at half-time. The Cuban goalie, Diosvelis Guerra, did what he could to delay Mexico’s opening goal, but he wasn’t able to prevent Oribe Peralta from scoring his first of the match on the 16th minute after several rebounds that his teammates failed to clear from the box. Mexico scored three goals in just twenty minutes and that proved to be enough to annihilate Cuba’s resistance.
Club América’s experienced forward Oribe Peralta signed a hat-trick, while Carlos Vela, Andres Guardado and Gio dos Santos netted in the remaining three goals.
Although they were playing against a fairly inferior team, Mexico looked fairly solid throughout the entire match, a completely different team from the one that played in Copa America. Miguel Herrera knows how important this competition is for his team and he also knows how important the first matches of the tournament are for the favourites teams. The upcoming clash against Guatemala will probably not be as easy as their previous one, but Mexico cannot lean back and wait for things to happen by miracle, otherwise they might suffer a major upset.
As for Guatemala, they are definitely not going through a very positive period as they have only won one of the last ten matches they took part in. A disastrous first-half in their opening match against Trinidad and Tobago cost them a painful 3-1 defeat and maybe, just maybe, a place in the next stage of the tournament. After 25 minutes, Guatemala were already down by 3-0 and not even a higher ball possession percentage allowed them to bounce back and battle for the match. Their captain Carlos Ruiz netted in their lonely goal on the 61st minute, but it was already too late for Ivan Sopegno’s boys.
