Next Saturday, 11th of July 2015, the current champions, USA, will measure forces with the modest Haiti at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough on what will be the fourth match of CONCACAF Gold Cup’s Group A.
The USA won their first match of the tournament against Honduras last Tuesday, but this wasn’t, by any means, a walk in the park for the hosts. Honduras started the match at full speed and forced Brad Guzan to hard work on two different occasions, first by Lozano and later by Alfredo Mejia. Los Catrachos appeared to be in control of the match but all of a sudden things changed for them when the experienced Clint Dempsey headed in the US team first goal, after a corner that caused mayhem in the Honduran box.
Despite suffering this setback, Honduras did not lower their arms and Andy Najar caught the US team daydreaming just before the break and almost got the equalizer after a powerful shot from outside the area.
The USA were definitely below par during the first-half but after the break they have somehow managed to make amends. On the 64th minute, Clint Dempsey, the man who has been in the news recently for the wrong reasons, netted in his second of the night when he headed in a superb delivery from the talented playmaker Michael Bradley.
Four minutes later, however, the US team showed some poor defensive skills as they allowed Carlos Discua to score his first international goal, something that allowed Honduras to get back in the game with still 20 minutes to play.
Jürgen Klinsmann’s men need to improve if they want to win the 13th edition of the Gold Cup, but another win in the upcoming match against Haiti will certainly give them that extra confidence that sometimes is needed in these particular occasions.
As for Haiti, Marc Collat’s boys somehow managed to snatch a valuable 1-1 draw from their match against Panama, who had, in theory, everything in their favour to win the clash. Panama scored first thanks to a goal from Alberto Quintero ten minutes after the break but Haiti never lowered their arms and leveled things later on in the match, with a goal from the substitute Duckens Nazon.
