Next Wednesday, 8th of July 2015, the current trophy holders, United States, will measure forces with the always complicated side from Honduras at the Toyota Stadium in Frisco for their opening match at the 13th edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
After a somewhat modest performance at the World Cup in Brazil last year, the United States have experienced several difficulties in the friendly matches that followed the tournament, as they have only managed to win two matches until the end of March 2015. The US manager, former German sharpshooter Jürgen Klinsmann, has always shown a tremendous confidence in his team and he finally managed to rally the troops after a row of not very impressive results.
During the United States’ recent European tour, Klinsmann’s men left everyone stranded as they managed to overcome two of the major powerhouses of the Old Continent, The Netherlands and Germany. The US team snatched a fantastic 4-3 win over Guus Hiddink’s clockwork orange at the beautiful Amsterdam Arena, in what was a spectacular match, with both teams having several opportunities to score. Five days later, The Yanks overcame the all-powerful and current World Champions, Germany, in Cologne by 2-1, thanks to a fantastic late goal from Bobby Wood.
Klinsmann has been doing a fantastic job since he took the helm of the US team, something that automatically transforms them into firm favourites to win the current edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
As for Honduras, Los Catrachos left behind a very poor image of themselves at the World Cup last Summer, although, it is fair to say that the team has changed significantly since Jorge Luis Pinto took the reins of the team last December. The highly experienced Colombian manager, who did a fantastic job with Costa Rica, has embraced a considerably more complicated task when he accept this new job, but, so far, Honduras seem to be improving as a whole as the matches go by.
Last Thursday, La Bicolor snatched a goalless draw in their preparation match against Mexico and their manager seemed quite happy with his team’s overall performance, as may be witnessed by his post-match statements: “We have changed a lot,” (...) “I feel that the team plays more with the ball and suddenly is more tactical and looks to play faster football.”
