Next Monday, 27th of July 2015, the superbly organized Jamaica will measure forces with Mexico at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia for the final match of the 13th edition of the Gold Cup.
After beating the USA in the tournament’s semi-finals, the Jamaican team was considered by many pundits as the most impressive and well organized side of the entire competition. Jamaica, who left a fairly pale image behind during the Copa America, are now a completely different team, with fairly more solid defence line and with extremely dynamic counter-attack processes that tend to cause several problems to their opponents. The highly experienced German manager Winfried Schäfer has been slowly transforming the team when it comes to match tactics and, at the same time, he is managing to take the most from the quality group of players that he has gathered around him.
Against the US team, Jamaica took advantage of some defensive inconsistency from their opponents, especially in the first goal, where their marking was fairly ineffective. Their frontmen, Mattocks and Barnes, have been doing great in the tournament so far, and they will certainly cause Mexico plenty of problems next Monday.
As for Mexico, it is hard to put into words what happened in their semi-finals’ match against Panama. El Tricolor was down 1-0 until the dying moments of the match, when the referee, the American Mark Geiger, decided to concede them a penalty, which allowed them to grant the equalizer and take the match into extra-time. That particular moment was a huge blow to a 10-man Panama, without their most important player, Luis Tejada, who had been sent-off in the first-half, and Mexico madr the most out of it. Nevertheless, they needed Mark Geiger to concede them another penalty during extra-time in order to defeat an already disheartened Panama.
Mexico have a fantastic team and an extremely competent head coach, but they have definitely not been at their very best this tournament and have to consider themselves very lucky to have reached the final.
