Next Monday, 20th of July 2015, the super favourites, Mexico, will measure forces with the usually well organized Costa Rica at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford for the last match of the Gold Cup 2015 Quarter-finals.
After a very modest stint at Copa America, Mexico started the 13th edition of the Gold Cup in full steam, smashing the fragile Cuban side by the staggering result of 6-0. Nevertheless, La Tricolor’s display of power was only confined to the first match of the tournament as they’ve failed to win the two following group stage clashes. After a lame and unconvincing draw with a melancholic Guatemala, who pulled their lines back and efficiently tackled Mexico’s usual attacking avalanche, Miguel Herrera’s men didn’t find a way to overcome a brave Trinidad & Tobago in their last group clash. The match ended in a spectacular 4-4 with three of the game’s eight goals being scored on the last 10 minutes of the match. After an own goal by Kenwyne Jones on the 90th minute that put Mexico on the lead 4-3, La Tricolor failed to secure their advantage and conceded a goal on the 93rd minute when Yohance Marshall headed in a quality corner kick from Joevin Jones.
Mexico need to finally pulled rank if they want to win the tournament and it is better for them to start immediately in their upcoming match with Costa Rica, since they will face a very complicated opponent, which is also a firm favourite to claim the Gold Cup trophy at the end of this month in Philadelphia.
As for Costa Rica, they have so far failed to win a single match in the tournament but managed to secure a place in the Quarter-finals, thanks to the three points they have collected from three draws in the respective number of matches.
During their last group stage match against Canada, Los Ticos’ overall performance again left something to be desired and the clash ended in a somewhat bland goalless draw.
Paulo Wanchope will need to put up something very special if he wants to overcome Mexico next Monday; otherwise, if Costa Rica’s unimpressive performances continue, they will certainly say goodbye to the Gold Cup.
