Next Saturday, 27th of June 2015, the all-powerful Argentina will measure forces with José Pekerman’s solidly organized Colombia at Estadio Sausalito in Viña del Mar for the third match of Copa America Quarter-finals’ stage.
It is legitimate to claim that Gerardo “Tata” Martino’s Argentina is fairly more competent than the one from his predecessor, Alejandro Sabella, but their recent performances in Copa America have been far from impressive. In their last match against Jamaica, La Albiceleste left behind a very pale image of themselves but still managed to snatch a narrow and bland 1-0 win, thanks to an early goal from Napoli’s sharpshooter Gonzalo Higuain.
Argentina finished their group stage in the first place with seven points from three matches but their slip up against Paraguay and the narrow wins over Uruguay and Jamaica are still on their demanding supporters’ minds, who certainly face the upcoming clash with some scepticism.
In order to overcome Los Cafeteros, “Tata” Martino needs to rally his troops and prepare them to what will certainly be a fairly complicated tactical battle. Argentina will certainly present their usual 4-3-3 system, with Javier Pastore and Leo Messi working as the liaison elements between the midfield and the forward lines.
As for Colombia, except for the match against Brazil, where they put up a solid and consistent performance, Los Cafeteros’ performances at Copa America have been leaving something to be desired so far.
José Pekerman keeps pushing an out-of-form Radamel Falcao up in the front, relegating Atlético Madrid’s new man, Jackson Martinez, to the bench. El Tigre is nothing but a shadow of what he used to be when he arrived in Europe a few years ago and his decreasing influence in the team’s attacking maneuvers and his absence from the team’s goal tally is clearly opening a void difficult to fill in Colombia’s starting line-up. Pekerman needs to rethink his strategy if he doesn’t want to be destroyed by Gerardo Martino’s Argentina.
Colombia struggled really hard during their last match against a well organized Peruvian side and may consider themselves lucky with the match’s outcome and with the fact that James Rodriguez was sent off after elbowing an opponent.
