Next Wednesday, 17th of June 2015, an Argentinean side hurting in their pride will measure forces with the current trophy holders, Uruguay, at Estadio La Portada in La Serena on a match for the Group B of Copa America 2015.
After a solid and extremely consistent performance during the first-half of the match against Paraguay last Saturday, Argentina took the result for granted and ended up by conceding a 2-2 draw at the end of the 90th minutes. La Albiceleste controlled every aspect of the match before the break and pushed Paraguay against the ropes. Argentina’s attacking movements were fairly effective and Paraguay should consider themselves lucky to have gotten away with just 2-0 in the first forty-five minutes. Messi and Aguero commanded the troops and displayed a very different Argentina from the one that played at the World Cup last Summer.
Regardless of Argentina’s dominance, Paraguay didn’t give up and got back in the game when Valdez netted in the team’s first goal on the 60th minute. Instead of bouncing back, La Albiceleste allowed Paraguay to increase their confidence levels and, in the dying moments of the match, Spartak Moscow’s man (who spent last season on loan at Montpellier) Lucas Barrios scored the equalizer.
Argentina’s upcoming match with Uruguay will certainly be a very complicated one but Gerardo Martino’s boys cannot allow any more slipups, otherwise they risk being eliminated from the tournament.
As for Uruguay, the current Copa America title holders have started this year’s tournament off on the right foot, by beating Jamaica with a single goal from Cristian Rodriguez. The match against the Central American team was, however, far from easy. Uruguay’s overall performance was not very impressive as the team showed a blatant lack of imagination for the most part of their attacking movements.
If they want to overcome Argentina next Wednesday, Uruguay need to put up a much more consistent performance if they want to avoid suffering a major setback.
