Next Tuesday, 16th of June 2015, the tournament hosts, Chile, will measure forces with a somewhat disappointing Mexico team at the beautiful Estadio Nacional in Santiago for the fourth match of Copa America 2015’s Group A.
Chile started the 44th edition of Copa America off on the right foot by beating Ecuador in the tournament’s opening match by 2-0. It wasn’t although an easy match by any means for the home side, who only managed to break the deadlock during the second-half, when Vidal converted a penalty and caused great explosion of joy at the stadium. The goal, nevertheless, didn’t discourage Ecuador, who fought bravely for the equalizer and even had some clamorous chances to achieve it. Despite Ecuador’s efforts, it was Chile who showed more personality and game quality throughout the entire match. Jorge Sampaoli’s men controlled almost every aspect of the game and showed great class when in possession of the ball.
On the 84th minute, Eduardo Vargas, who came in as a substitute right after the break, sentenced the match after a pinpointing assist from the usual suspect, Alexis Sanchez.
Chile deserved their win and showed once again that they may be battling until the end for the tournament’s title. Their upcoming match against Mexico will certainly be pretty complicated, especially if we have in mind that the Central American team usually plays on a tactical scheme fairly similar to the one Jorge Sampaoli has been implementing in the Chilean team since he took charge.
As for Mexico, El Tri didn’t have the best of starts in the tournament, as they’ve failed to overcome Bolivia on their first match in the early hours of Saturday (European time). Miguel Herrera, who left some important players out of Copa America, approached the match with a fairly conservative way, benching some of the team’s most creative players. The match ended in a goalless draw and Mexico only have themselves to blame for such unconvincing and even compromising result. El Tri are now in a delicate position in their group and are almost forced to defeat Chile if they want to maintain their hopes of granting the first place and secure a spot at the knockout stage.
