Next Thursday, 18th of June 2015, the all-powerful five-time World Champions Brazil will take on Colombia at Estadio Monumental David Arellano in Santiago on a Group C match of the 44th edition of the Copa America.
Last weekend’s defeat against Venezuela will certainly be difficult for both the Colombian players and supporters to digest. José Pékerman’s men didn’t have the best of performances and were taken by surprise by a well organized and fully committed Venezuela, who knew how to make the most out of Colombia’s defensive frailties. With a team packed with top quality players, James Rodriguez, Radamel Falcao and Carlos Bacca, only to name a few, Los Cafeteros only managed to have an apparent control of the events as they had more ball possession and had several more chances to score. Nevertheless, such dominance didn’t mean anything for Colombia who was surprised by a quick attacking move from the Venezuelan team on 60th minute of the match, which ended up in a quality goal from Zenit St. Petersburg’s versatile forward Salomón Rondón.
Colombia are now forced to defeat Brazil if they want to keep nurturing their hopes of snatching a place in the next round of the tournament, but in order to achieve that, they will need to put up a much better performance than the one they have produced last weekend against an apparently fragile Venezuela.
As for Brazil, the Canarinha faced some unexpected difficulty in overcoming a brave Peru last weekend and in a way might consider themselves lucky to have granted the three points. It was a frantic match, especially during the first-half, with both teams enjoying from plenty of opportunities to score. It were Peru who opened the score very early in the match, thanks to a good effort from Alianza Lima’s midfielder Christian Cueva, but Brazil quickly put themselves together and fired back the equalizer just two minutes after Peru’s goal.
Dunga’s Brazil only managed to clinch their victory in the dying moments of the match thanks to a goal from Douglas Costa. The five-time World Champions piled on the pressure during the last ten minutes of the match and got their reward.
