Next Saturday, 27th of June 2015, the all-powerful Brazil will go head-to-head with a particularly inconsistent Paraguay at Estadio Municipal de Concepcion on what will be the last match of Copa America Quarter-finals’ stage.
Brazil’s performances at Copa America have been somewhat disappointing so far and most of the pundits and even Brazilian supporters blame not only their head coach, Dunga, but the also the players for the less impressive football they have been displaying.
Without Neymar’s contribution, who will miss the remaining matches of the competition due to suspension, Brazil experienced some difficulty in overcoming Venezuela on their last group match. The last 15 minutes of the match, especially after Venezuela’s goal, were particularly difficult for the Canarinha, who were forced to fall back and withstand Los Llaneros desperate attempts to score.
Brazil have only been defeated once since Dunga took the helm of the team after the turmoil of the World Cup last year, although it is fair to say that their overall display at Copa America have been somehow disappointing. Their defeat against Colombia exposed the team’s defensive frailties and has also showed that there is also something wrong up in the front of the team, where the lack of reliable options (apart from Firmino) raises some questions regarding Dunga’s choices for the tournament.
As for Paraguay, after their impressive 2-2 draw against the super favourites, Argentina, in their first match of the group stage, Los Guaranies’ performances in the other two matches have left something to be desired. A narrow 1-0 win over a modest Jamaican side and a boring draw with Uruguay, in what surely was the most boring match of the tournament so far, was the best Paraguay managed to achieve. On the other hand, Los Guaranies are yet to be defeated at Copa America so far and if we have in mind their recent record against Brazil, one might argue that they probably should be optimistic for the upcoming match.
Nestor Ortigoza, Raul Bobadilla and Lucas Barrios were substituted in the match against Uruguay due to injury and they are still in doubt for next Saturday’s clash with the five-time World Champions.
