Next Saturday, 4th of July 2015, the tournament hosts, Chile, will entertain the all-powerful Argentina at the emblematic Estadio Nacional in Santiago for the Final match of the 44th edition of Copa America.
Last Wednesday, Argentina showed no mercy to Paraguay and, in a way, avenged that unconvincing 2-2 draw in their group stage’s opening match. La Albiceleste won the clash by 6-1 and not only secured a place in the tournament final but also hammered in the first defeat of Paraguay in Copa America.
Argentina showed great class throughout the entire match and put up a very solid performance. Led by the mastery of Leo Messi, who contributed with three assists to the team’s six goals, La Albiceleste showed great determination and a considerable and quality amount of attacking movements that almost and at all times caused mayhem to Paraguay’s defensive line.
On the other hand, it was also Argentina’s defensive quartet that displayed several unrest moments, especially during the first-half. It was precisely on one of those unfocused moments that Los Guaranies scored their goal, just before the break, when a misguided long ball from Nicolas Otamendi to Javier Pastore ended up intercepted by Paraguay’s midfield line and eventually found its way to Lucas Barrios’ feet, who placed it in Romero’s net.
As for Chile, the tournament hosts have been having an excellent campaign at Copa America so far but they had to work extra hard in order to overcome Peru in the Semi-finals’ match.
With just ten men Peru proved to be a tough bone to chew and resisted Chile’s attacking avalanche as much as they could. The South American La Roja controlled the entire match, having an impressive ball possession percentage of 72%. It is not easy to counter Jorge Sampaoli’s heavily synchronized match and so far only Mexico, in a way, managed to do so. Chile’s midfield and forward lines are a constant menace to their opponents and they will certainly cause much trouble to Argentina’s defensive sector, who tends to be very sloppy from time to time.
Chile and Argentina are by far the most consistent teams of the tournament, but everything can happen in the final match, so let’s wait and see who will show nerves of steel and claim the Copa America title.
