Next Saturday, 20th of June 2015, the tournament hosts, Chile, will measure forces with the mighty Bolivia at Estadio Nacional in Santiago for Group A’s last match of the 44th Copa America edition.
Chile’s last match against Mexico was a truly great monument to football with both teams putting up vintage performances and maintaining the uncertainty over the final score until the very last minute. Mexico, who have a left a very poor image of themselves behind in their opening match with Bolivia, gave Chile some hard time during the first-half and opened the score thanks to a Vuoso’s goal on the 21st minute. The home side bounced back and Juventus midfielder, Arturo Vidal, netted in the equalizer one minute later. The last 25’ minutes of the first-half were really frantic since four goals were scored during that period. At half-time, the score was 2-2. The second-half started in the exact same way with both teams constantly looking for the goal. Chile had some reasons to complain, since the referee denied them two goals due to alleged offside position. The match ended with a 3-3 draw, but Chile showed that they have everything necessary to win this year’s tournament, although they need to fix their somewhat sloppy defensive marking.
Watching Chile passing the ball around and the team’s attacking movements is a delight to sore eyes and one should credit their head coach, Jorge Sampaoli, for such achievement, since he has been doing a fantastic job at the South American La Roja.
As for Bolivia, they are proving to be the underdogs of the tournament. Last Monday’s night win over Ecuador was their first victory outside Bolivian territory in twenty years, but they have truly deserved it. Bolivia showed great determination in their opening match against Mexico and last Monday’s night they did it again when they faced Ecuador, by putting up an almost flawless performance during the first-half of the match.
Driven by a strong willed Marcelo Moreno, the brave Bolivian team went to the break winning by 3-0 and although they experienced some difficulties during the second-half (they conceded two goals during that period), it is fair to say that they deserved the three points at the end of the match.
