Next Sunday, 22nd of June 2015, a highly motivated Colombia will measure forces with a well organized Peru at Estadio Municipal German Becker in Temuco for both teams’ final match in the Group C of Copa America.
After their unexpected defeat against their neighbours of Venezuela, Colombia pulled ranks when they met Brazil earlier this week. Led by their wonderboy James Rodriguez and by their powerful defensive midfielder Carlos Sanchez, Los Cafeteros put up an almost vintage performance, especially during the first-half, against the five-time World Cup champions, pushing them against the ropes on several different occasions throughout the match.
A lonely first-half goal from the Granada defender Jeison Murillo was enough to offer Colombia their first win in the tournament. Jose Pekerman put together bold counter-attack based tactics that, in a way, managed to completely take by surprise Dunga’s Brazil and to expose their defensive frailties on several occasions.
Colombia definitely have one of the best teams of the tournament and not even the fact that their sharpshooter, Radamel Falcao, is completely out of form has served to decrease the overall quality of the team. The clash against Peru will surely not be easy, now that Ricardo Gareca’s quality work is becoming more evident as the matches go by.
As for Peru, their recent victory over Venezuela will certainly offer the team that extra boost of motivation they had been looking for over the last couple of months. The quality tactical work of their Argentinean head coach, Ricardo Gareca, is already producing the desirable effect in a team that needs to be renewed in a short period of time.
Peru have already left behind a fairly good image in their tournament opening match against Brazil and thus their win over Venezuela didn’t come as a surprise. Los Incas were fairly superior throughout the entire match, but one cannot deny that they benefited a lot from Amorebieta’s red card on the 30th minute of the first-half.
The match against Colombia will definitely be a huge test for Peru, but since all teams of the group currently have three points provides La Blanquirroja the possibility of walking through to the next stage of the competition in case of win.
