Next Saturday, 4th of July 2015, the two most impressive surprises of the tournament, Peru and Paraguay, will measure forces at Estadio Municipal de Concepcion for the third place playoff match of Copa America.
Peru were probably one of the most organized teams of the 44th edition of Copa America. Ricardo Gareca, who only took over the reins of the team last February, did a fantastic job with Peru as he managed to improved both the team’s game flow and almost all the tactical aspects in a short period of time. Los Incas have only lost twice in the tournament: the first time was against Brazil in their opening match (but they have probably deserved something better in that particular match), and the second time was earlier this week during the Copa America semi-finals against the hosts, Chile. Peru did everything that was within their reach, but with just ten men (Zambrano was sent off on the 20th minute of the first-half) it was hard to keep up with Chile’s attacking avalanche and short passing game, which usually tends to suffocate their opponents.
Next Saturday, Peru have a golden opportunity to claim a respectable third place in the tournament and will certainly try to take advantage of the potentially fragile emotional condition of Paraguay, who were hammered 6-1 by Argentina this week.
As for Paraguay, Los Guaranies were abruptly brought down to Earth by a demolishing Argentinean side back on Wednesday, who inflicted their first, but decisive, defeat of the tournament.
Similar to their upcoming opponents, Paraguay was also a pleasant surprise throughout the tournament, but and at same time, they have also showed a fair share of defensive limitations, as it was blatantly obvious on the match against La Albiceleste. Paraguay wasn’t able to cope with Argentina’s attacking avalanche and with the team’s extremely quick movements in the front and ended up by conceding a somewhat humiliating defeat.
Their manager, Ramon Diaz, will need to rally his troops for the upcoming match, since a heavy defeat such as the one they suffered against Argentina usually produces some nephast effects in a team and certainly things will not be different with Paraguay.
