Next Thursday, 7th of July 2016, the current World Champions Germany will measure forces with the tournament hosts France at the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille on the second match of the Euro 2016 Semi-finals.
After cruising over Slovakia in the Round of 16, Germany had to dig very deep in order to overcome an extremely well organized Italy last time out. Mesut Ozil’s goal on minute 65’ helped the Germans to have apparent control of the match and to create a few goal chances to double their lead. When Germany seemed to have the match on their hands, Jérome Boateng’s artistic marking skills cost them a major upset when the referee signaled a penalty after the ball touched Bayern Munich defender’s arm, following Florenzi’s cross to the box. Italy leveled the score and the match had to be decided during the penalty shootout, but the Germans were stronger in that department winning by 6-5.
For the upcoming important match against France, Joachim Löw will not be able to rely on the services of experienced defender Mats Hummels, who is currently suspended. Mario Gomez and Sami Khedira, who are struggling with some muscle injuries, are in doubt for next Thursday’s fixture.
As for France, after several lacklustre performances both in the group stage and Round of 16 matches, they have managed to pull off a solid display against the tournament debutants of Iceland last time out. The French won the clash by 5-2 with Dimitri Payet and Antoine Griezmann once again leading the team on what was likely to be an extremely complicated match against an opponent that had already eliminated England in the previous round of the tournament. France have a blatant dependency on the skills of these two excellent footballers and a less impressive performance by one of them next time out could very well be the end of the line for the Les Bleus.
For the decisive fixture against the all-powerful Germany next Thursday’s night, France head coach Didier Deschamps will apparently be able to count on all his players, since there aren’t currently any names on the team’s injury list.
