The ATP’s 62nd ranked player looked in control of his match with Gael Monfils before the Frenchman launched a flurry of athletic shots to come from behind and triumph in five sets, the norm for the enigmatic Monfils. In an earlier match, Monfils needed four sets to overcome unheralded Andreas Haider-Maurer. Yet, France’s best bet to pull a major upset rests with the athletic 13th seed, who possesses a 4-8 record against the champion of champions, Roger Federer, the second seed. In fact, the last two times they have played on clay, Monfils was victorious. Federer’s famous one-handed backhand is more vulnerable on clay and Monfils has had success against it in the past. The problem for Monfils is maintaining focus in what will be an electric environment.
