The top of the draw was predictable but the bottom half was marked with upsets as two unlikely combatants prepare to take center court on Friday and entertain legions of excited followers. The crowd will overflow as France has their first semifinalists on their home turf in many years.
The Djokovic – Murray winner will emerge as the favorite in the finals. After their rousing Australian Open final, Djokovic must be favored to extend his opportunity at to hold all four major titles at one time. The play will thrill the crowd as what most observers believe to be the two best male players go head-to-head for the 27th time.
Novak owns a commanding 18-8 record against his biggest challenger but they have only met twice on clay with the Serb winning both matches. Extraordinary shot-making and powerful groundstrokes will mark this war. Murray’s most recent win was timely, the 2013 Wimbledon Final, but since then Novak has run off seven consecutive wins.
Murray had a shot in Melbourne but flittered away the first set, which will be the key to this final as well. Murray played through an expected challenge from David Ferrer in the quarters while Novak cruised past Rafa Nadal and looked invincible.
