Can Stan Wawrinka face the Djokovic pressure and keep his composure? Top seeded Novak Djokovic needed two days to finish off top challenger Andy Murray but looked crisp after a tentative start on Saturday. Wawrinka, who was warming up on a nearby court, stopped practice to watch the two ATP heavyweights go after each other in the finest tennis played at Roland Garros this year. If Stan can come up with a superlative effort like Murray’s, he can keep this one close and give the fans something to cheer about.
The eight seed is a well-deserved longshot to defeat the Australian Open champion who looks to complete the Grand Slam. In their 20 previous matches, Djoko has won 17 times. Stan has not beaten Novak on clay since 2006.
Wawrinka has played through a difficult draw, defeating Simon (12), Federer (2) and Tsonga (14) in successive matches. He has been dominant at times, going four sets twice to this point. But, the force is across the net on Sunday and it is greater than Stan.
Murray was the first challenger to win a set from the smooth, well-conditioned Djoko. Wawrinka will have to break serve and hold to stand any chance, a formula only Murray could achieve. But, Djoko squandered countless break points before taking complete control in the fifth set.
