Serena is on the march and that spells bad news for her female competitors. Imposing, feisty and powerful, there does not appear to be a challenger left in the field who can measure up to the task of upsetting the number one player in the history of Women’s tennis. But, as they say, that’s why we tie our laces and go to the court to settle matches.
What else is there to say about the best female tennis player to ever stand on center court. Her $67 million plus career earnings and more than $4 million this year alone set her apart in more ways than one. Her mere presence is usually enough to send tremors through opponents.
In Paris, Serena has tempted us by going three sets in three of her five matches. Azarenka and Sloane Stephens each had opportunities to win but fell by the wayside. There is no way, Serena loses this battle against her 25-year old opponent, who will enjoy her biggest payday by reaching the semis.
Timea is in the midst of a career year. She has as many titles in her pocket as does Serena in 2015 and has earned a nifty $500,000 prior to Paris. Yet, nobody seems to know how she fares so well. When she dusted off Kvitova 6-0, 6-3 after dropping the first set, she established herself as a real “up and comer.”
Reaching the third round in Melbourne seemed to light a fire under Switzerland’s female champion. She’ll need a super, outside the body, effort to make this go three sets.
