Two relative unknowns battle for a semifinal appearance. You are forgiven if you are unfamiliar with either of these quarterfinal opponents. Despite their promise, they are not household names and are probably fortunate to be facing each other in a huge opportunity. Timea is age 25, has two titles in her pocket this year, carries a 27-6 2015 won-loss record and has earned more than $2 million in her short career.
Alison is 21 years young. And, it shows. Yet, she has 176 career wins and an admirable 18-13 record this season. Over her two-year career, she has won more than $400,000. Both players are serious prospects although Alison has never won a professional title. Bacsinszky has knocked out such proven contenders as 4th seeded Petra Kvitova (3 sets) and Madison Keys in straight sets, in two matches where she had more unforced errors than outright winners. She broke the hard-serving Kvitova seven times in three sets. She has never advanced past the second round in five previous trips to Paris. Alison’s biggest payday will come at the expense of four players who were not expected to succeed, but did. She has never advanced past the first round of a major except for a second round appearance at Wimbledon last year. We think Timea will continue her hot season and move on fairly easily.
