Next Sunday, 19th of July 2015, Haiti, one of the most pleasant surprises of the tournament, will measure forces with Group B winners, Jamaica, at the M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore for the second match of the quarter-finals for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Haiti have beaten the odds by finishing second on their respective group righ, behind the US team. The Haitians have only lost once during the group stage, precisely against the USA, on a match that had an unfair outcome, if we have in mind what Les Grenadiers had done during the first-half. In their last group stage’s fixture, Haiti managed to overcome Jorge Luis Pinto’s Honduras, thus sealing a place in the quarter-finals. Los Catrachos were a huge disappointment in this tournament, especially if we have in mind that they had managed to reach the semi-finals in the previous edition of this competition, and Haiti knew how to exploit their weaknesses to claim the three points. An early goal from their forward, Duckens Nazon, was enough to seal their win over a disheartened Honduras that seemed to have lacked the necessary commitment and determination during the entire match. Haiti’s next opponent, Jamaica, will certainly be a tough bone for them to chew and Les Grenadiers’ recent record against them is far from impressive. Haiti have failed to win any of the last five matches against Jamaica, being defeated in four occasions and getting away with a draw in a friendly match back in 2009.
As for Jamaica, the Reggae Boyz did very good during the group stage, winning two of the three matches they took part in and obtaining a draw against one of the favourites, Costa Rica.
After their pale and bland performance at Copa America, the Jamaicans are letting a completely different image of themselves shine through during the Gold Cup. After a draw with Costa Rica in their opening match, Jamaica managed to overcome both Canada and El Salvador by a narrow one-goal margin, but in the end, what matters is that they did.
Jamaica more experienced than Haiti, but they cannot be complacent against their upcoming opponents or they might risk suffering a major upset.
