Next Thursday, 16th of July 2015, the super favourites Mexico will measure forces with the surprising Trinidad & Tobago at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, in what will be match number 18 of the 13th edition of the Gold Cup.
After completely annihilating Cuba by 6-0 during their opening match of the tournament, the supporters certainly expected more from the Mexican team during their clash against a modest side such as Guatemala. El Tricolor controlled the entire match but have never found a way to overcome an utterly inspired Paulo Motta, who put up an almost vintage in Guatemala’s goal. Mexico’s statistics at the end of the match are quite impressive: 66% of ball possession, 14 goal attempts, 4 shots on goal, 10 shots off goal and 10 corners kicks, but these weren’t enough to disrupt the solid strategy that Guatemala had prepared.
Mexico played the last twenty minutes of the match against just ten players, after Guatemala’s attacking midfielder José Manuel Contreras was shown the red card, but not even that was enough for El Tri to win the match.
Mexico will need to improve in their upcoming clash against Trinidad & Tobago, and although they have almost granted a place in the next stage of the tournament, Miguel “Piojo” Herrera needs to alert his players to the dangers of complacency at this particularly important stage of the competition.
As for Trinidad & Tobago, they are proving to be one of the most pleasing surprises of the tournament so far as they have won all the matches in which they have been involved. The Soca Warriors, who were going through a particularly complicated moment before the start of the Gold Cup, are now at the top of their group and just need a draw against Mexico in order to secure the 1st place.
Trinidad & Tobago haven’t, however, won any of their last five matches against Mexico and were even trashed 7-0 back in the year of 2000. Stephen Hart’s men have doing good in the competition so far, but the experienced manager will need to put up something very special to defeat a fairly superior team such as Mexico.
