Next Tuesday, 14th of July 2015, the current trophy holders, USA, will measure forces with an usually complicated Panama at Sporting Park in Kansas City for match number 14 of the 13th edition of the Gold Cup.
The US team’s recent match against Haiti was far from being a walk in the park. The Haitians showed a great determination throughout the entire match and enjoyed from several chance to score. First it was Jerome Mechack with a well placed shot from a free-kick that hit the crossbar and later it Wilde Guerrier’s turn to scare Brad Guzan with a powerful shot from the edge of the box. The US team experienced some complicated periods during the first-half and their manager, Jürgen Klinsmann, wasn’t able to disguise his worries on the bench.
The half-time was good to the US team as they returned from the break fairly more concentrated and twice as creative. On the 46th minute, Gyasi Zardes replaced Jozy Altidore and on the following minute provided a quality cross to the usual suspect, Clint Dempsey, for the match’s only goal that granted the USA the three points in their second clash of the tournament. Haiti did not lower their arms but Klinsmann’s men managed to control the match from that moment onwards.
Despite winning the two matches in which they have taken part so far, the US team’s performances have left something to be desired and it is blatantly obvious that they need to improve if they want to win the competition once again.
As for Panama, they are definitely not enjoying the best of moments as they failed to win their last four matches. Los Canaleros started their match against Honduras at a good pace and managed to open the score thanks to a Luis Tejada’s goal on minute 20’. Panama, however, didn’t find a way to counter Honduras’ attacking avalanche and conceded the equalizer later in match. Hernan Gomez’s boys might even consider themselves lucky to have gotten away with a point from that match, especially if we had in mind that Honduras had 14 goal attempts and more ball possession during the entire clash.
Panama is currently in the second place of their group, behind the USA, who have already granted a place in the next stage of the competition, and they cannot afford to lose the match against Klinsmann’s men, otherwise, they risk being eliminated.
