Next Wednesday, 22nd of July 2015, the trophy holders and tournament hosts, USA, will measure forces with a well organized Jamaica at Georgia Dome in Atlanta in the first match of the Gold Cup Semi-finals.
After experiencing some unexpected difficulties during the group stage matches, the USA showed no mercy to Cuba and trashed them by 6-0 in the tournament’s Quarter-finals match that took place at Baltimore last Saturday. Jürgen Klinsmann’s boys showed no complacency whatsoever from the very first minute of the match and at half-time they were already leading the scoreboard by 4-0. The usual suspect Clint Dempsey was the hat-trick hero of the day by netting in the first and the last two goals of the US team, as he confirmed his position at the top of the scorers chart with six goals at the moment.
Cuba failed to cause the US team any major problems, as the quality gap between both teams was already incredibly wide even before the match. Dempsey’s early goal almost annihilate the Cubans’ already faint hopes and Gyasi Zardes’ goal on minute 13 was the final blow to the Central American team’s resistance.
For the upcoming match against Jamaica, things will surely not be so easy for the USA and it will be interesting to see how the current Gold Cup champions will act when faced with a fairly more organized team, which still hasn’t been defeated in the tournament so far.
As for Jamaica, the Reggae Boyz have been going through a very positive moment since the start of the Gold Cup early this month. After a modest and extremely unconvincing stint at Copa America back in June, Jamaica kept showing a completely different image of themselves and granted a place in the Semi-finals thanks to a narrow win over the surprising Haitian side. The match, nevertheless, was far from easy, and the Jamaicans were forced to work extra hard in order to secure their early lead. The good start by the Jamaicans and their early goal on the 6th minute of the match by Giles Barnes caught the Haitians by surprise and proved to be enough to secure them a place in the next stage of the tournament.
