Two of the most decorated French clubs are all set to square off at Stade Pierre-Mauroy this Sunday with both teams in dire need of a morale boosting victory.
Things have not gone as planned for either LOSC Lille or Olympique de Marseille this season and bot sides are currently stuck in the lower half of the league table. Hosts of Sunday’s encounter, LOSC Lille, are currently 13th in the league with 11 points on the table at the end of gameweek 10. Les Dogues have won just 2 of their games this season while ending up on the losing side 3 times. 5 of their games have ended in a draw.
Hervé Renard’s side is coming into this game on the back of a frustrating 1-1 draw away to EA Guingamp and they have won just one of their last five league games, which came against Montpellier when Lille won 2-0 at home. One problem for Lille this season has been the lack of firepower upfront. Apart from Sofiane Boufal, who has four goals to his name in all competitions for Lille, no other player has managed to score more than one goal for LOSC. However, Lille have coped with that with a string of impressive performances at the back. By conceding just 5 times, they have proved that their defence is one of the best in Ligue 1 this season.
Olympique de Marseille have endured a horrid season so far. Les Phoceens are currently 16th in the league with just 9 points to their name. They have managed to win just 2 games this season while losing 5 of their matches already. They are coming in this game on the back of a poor run as they are winless in their last 5 competitive games. With three loses in their last five games, one of which came against a lesser known team, FC Slovan Liberec, in the Europa League, things are not looking good for one of the most successful clubs in France.
Marseille’s Michy Batshuayi has been one of the bright sparks for his team this season. With his team struggling to win games this time around, Batshuayi has stepped up on several occasions and is currently the top goal scorer for OM with 7 goals to his name in all competitions to date. Marseille need to step up their game and they have to do it sooner rather than later if they are to move up the table in coming weeks.
