Dortmund’s season has completely disintegrated as a Europa League defeat to Liverpool days after a 2-2 draw with Schalke in the league has seen them lose their grip on two competitions. They trail Bayern Munich by 7 points and with just 3 games remaining it would take a miracle for Munich to lose all 3. Dortmund haven’t let that affect them as they’ve had three consecutive victories all by the 3-0 score line. Thomas Tuchel’s side were on a fine run in 2016 but in the space of a week all their hard work was undone. Tuchel has also been struck hard with the news that Mats Hummels looks to be on his way to German rivals Bayern Munich. He would be the 3rd major player to leave the club to Munich with Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski making the same switch in the past 2 years.
Wolfsburg suffered a rare home defeat in the league to relegation threatened Augsburg. They dominated the game for large periods but missed the attacking influence of Andre Schurrle and Julian Draxler. Wolfsburg have won just 1 match from the previous 8 and that was against Real Madrid in the 1st leg of the quarter-finals in the Champions League but they were defeated 3-0 in the 2nd leg and knocked out of the competition. It has been a very disappointing season for Wolfsburg who are currently closer to the relegation zone than they are the Champions League places. Their demise has ultimately been their treacherous away form where they have the 2nd worst record in the league with just 10 points from 15 away games.
The side with the 2nd best home record in the Bundesliga welcome the league’s second worst side away from home. Wolfsburg did beat Dortmund in the 2015 DFB Pokal Final despite going a goal down after 5 minutes. It is the only time in the past 6 meetings that they’ve managed to defeat Dortmund. Goals are often on show between these 2 as there has been just one clean sheet in 10 games.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hasn’t featured for the past two games but the forward will be desperate to feature for Dortmund’s final 3 league games to close the gap on Robert Lewandowski for the golden boot. Ilkay Gundogan and Neven Subotic are also on the treatment table. Andre Schurrle returns from suspension but Julian Draxler will be missing alongside midfielder Vieirinha.
