Bayern Munich extended their lead at the top with a 3-1 victory over Schalke at the Veltins-Arena as Borussia Dortmund crashed to a surprising 3-1 defeat to Hamburg. Munich are now already 8 points clear after 13 games and Pep Guardiola’s side now look extremely likely to run away with another German Bundesliga title. The hierarchy at Munich always expect the Bundesliga but it is considered more important on how they perform in the Champions League which is a competition they are now starting to become more successful in. A win midweek over Olympiacos will seal their passage into the knockout stages of the competition. Robert Lewandowski didn’t manage to notch against Schalke despite boasting 7 shots on goal although he did hit the woodwork. Thomas Muller however did manage to score in injury time of the 2nd half and between Muller and his Polish strike partner, they’ve contributed 26 league goals between them.
Hertha Berlin now make the daunting trip to the Allianz Arena but they can take some confidence from their battling displays with Munich in the past. Munich have won the past 8 consecutive meetings but 3 of the last 4 victories have been by the odd goal which is a credit to Hertha for giving themselves some hope of snatching something from the game as many other Bundesliga sides are well out of sight by half time let alone 90 minutes. Hertha Berlin enter the game in good form with 2 wins out of 2 in November. A convincing 3-1 win away to Hannover was recently followed by a slender 1-0 win over Hoffenheim on Sunday but they were extremely poor and managed just 1 shot on goal all game. The winner came courtesy of an own goal which has kept them in 4th place and kept pace with Wolfsburg, Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen who all won.
Bayern have been very dominant this season domestically and one incredible statistic that was recently published was that if every shot against Bayern Munich went in, they would still be top of the league which is not only a credit to their prowess in front of goal but also the efficiency in defence. Munich have scored at least 4 goals in their last 4 home matches in the league. Hertha have won 3 games in a row away from home for the first time in 2 years but haven’t won 4 on the spin on their travels in the top flight for 11 years. Hertha haven’t come away from Munich with a win since 1977.
Thiago’s knee injury is set to rule him out for up to 4 weeks but given his history regarding his right knee in the past, it is unlikely Munich will take any chances with the midfielder and he could be out for the rest of the year. He joins Mario Gotze and Franck Ribery as influential players missing for Guardiola. Vedad Ibisevic hasn’t featured for Hertha since his sending off a month back and Mitchell Weiser is nursing an injury.
