Next Sunday, 4th of October 2015, a slightly fragilized Atlético Madrid will measure forces with their neighbours and rivals of Real Madrid at Vicente Calderón for Round 7 of the Spanish Liga BBVA.
Los Colchoneros are definitely not going through a very positive moment. After last weekend’s upset at El Madrigal against Villarreal, Diego Simeone’s men weren’t strong enough to overcome a brave SL Benfica side, that clinched a deserved win at Madrid last Wednesday’s night. Atlético opened the score still in the first-half thanks to a goal from the young Argentinean forward Angel Correa, but allowed the Portuguese champions to reach the equalizer a few minutes later. Los Colchoneros were favourites to win the match and had, in fact, an apparent control of the situation, especially during the first-half. Nevertheless, after the break, SL Benfica managed to exploit Altético’s unrestness and clinched an historical win at Vicente Calderón. It was the first win in over 30 years for the Portuguese side in Spanish territory and a major upset for Altético, who are now in the 2nd place of their group behind SL Benfica.
Los Colchoneros haven't been particularly impressive so far this season and two defeats in six league matches is far from being a dream start in a campaign where they are one of the major title contenders.
The Spanish international midfielder Koke is still recovering from a recent injury and for that reason he will probably miss next weekend’s big derby.
As for Real Madrid, Los Blancos also didn’t have the best of days when they met Málaga at Santiago Bernabéu last weekend. Rafa Benitez’s men failed to get anything better than a goalless draw, especially due to Idriss Kameni’s vintage performance.
Real Madrid are currently on the third place of the table, behind the league leaders, Villarreal, and their eternal rivals, Barcelona.
Last Wednesday, Los Blancos secured their second win for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, after overcoming Malmo FF at Sweden by 2-0 with two goals from the usual suspect, Cristiano Ronaldo.
