Next Sunday, 24th of January 2016, the league leaders, Atlético Madrid, will take on a moralized Sevilla at the emblematic Vicente Calderón for Round 21 of the Spanish Liga BBVA.
Atlético Madrid pulled ranks during their visit to Gran Canaria last Sunday and easily clawed a 3-0 win. An early goal by Filipe Luis in a way jeopardized UD Las Palmas’ plans for the match, but it was only in the second-half that Griezmann sealed the win for the Colchoneros scoring twice in just twenty minutes.
The win against the rejuvenated UD Las Palmas allowed Atlético Madrid to maintain their position at the top of table and their two point advantage over Barcelona, who have nevertheless, one match in hand.
In the middle of the week, Atlético Madrid failed to get anything better than a goalless draw on their visit to Los Balaídos for the first-leg of the Quarter-finals of Copa del Rey. Diego Simeone’s men weren’t able to replicate their 2-0 win from earlier this year and experienced in fact some difficulties to withstand Celta de Vigo’s attacking game.
For next weekend’s important and predictably complicated match against Sevilla, Diego Simeone will not be able to rely on the services of Tiago and Fernando Torres, who are undergoing treatment for their respective injuries.
As for Sevilla, the Andalusia team are once again going through a very impressive period with eight wins in their last ten competitive matches.
After last weekend’s win over their neighbours and rivals of Málaga in the Andalusia derby, Sevilla clawed another win last Thursday’s night in the first-leg of the Copa del Rey Quarter-finals against Mirandés at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. A first-half goal by N’Zonzi and another one by Vitolo on injury time allowed Unai Emery’s men to clinch their fifth consecutive win.
For next weekend’s complicated visit to Vicente Calderón, the Guipuzkoa born head coach will not be able to rely on the services of Iborra, who is currently suspended.
