Next Saturday, 19th of December 2015, an extremely motivated Deportivo de La Coruña will measure forces with SD Eibar at the emblematic Riazor for Round 16 of the Spanish Liga BBVA.
It is hard to describe how good Deportivo were at Camp Nou last Saturday’s afternoon. The Galician team held the all-powerful Barcelona to a draw while they also extended their impressive undefeated run to seven competitive matches. Victor Sánchez’s men had some difficulties to withstand Barça’s attacking game, especially during the first-half, and ended up being down by 2-0 on minute 62’ after a Rakitic’s superb effort from outside the box. Depor, however, did not lower their arms and took full advantage from the Catalan team’s array of defensive mistakes. The usual suspect, Lucas Pérez, put Deportivo back in the game on minute 77’ and, on the dying moments of the match, the canterano Álex Bergantiños leveled the score and in way restituted some justice to the scoreboard.
Deportivo weren’t by any means outclassed by Barcelona and they deserve all the credit for their almost vintage performance at Catalunya last time out.
Next weekend’s home match against SD Eibar will surely not be an easy one for the Galician team, as they will face a brave and mighty opponent that has been doing a fairly good campaign so far this season. Before that match, Depor will also host the second tier side UE Llagostera for the second-leg match of the Copa del Rey 1/16 finals. Deportivo won the first-leg match at Palamós by 2-1.
Celso Borges, Oriol Riera and Fabri will miss out there due to injury. Depor’s vice-captain Laure will also miss the match against SD Eibar due to suspension.
As for the SD Eibar, the Basque team is currently going through a negative run as they failed to win any of their last five competitive matches. The embarrassing midweek Copa del Rey 3-0 defeat against second tier side of Ponferradina and another defeat in the Basque derby against Real Sociedad represented a huge blow to SD Eibar, but they somehow managed to lift their heads during their last weekend’s clash with Valencia. Although they’ve failed to secure the three points, SD Eibar were by far the best during the entire match but a late own goal by Junca allowed Los Che to leave Ipurua with one point in their bags.
Before next weekend’s trip to Galicia, SD Eibar will still play the Copa del Rey second-leg match against Ponferradina at the Basque Country.
