Next Wednesday, 30th of December 2015, an extremely fragilized Rayo Vallecano will measure forces with Atlético Madrid at Campo de Fútbol de Vallecas for Round 17 of the Spanish Liga BBVA.
It is hard to describe what happened to Rayo Vallecano at Santiago Bernabéu two weeks ago. Los Franjirrojos were hammered by their neighbours of Real Madrid 10-2 and played a great deal of the match with just nine men, after Tito and Raul Baena were sent off. An early goal from Danilo put Real Madrid on the lead, but Rayo instantly rallied the troops and ten minutes later were already winning by 2-1. Nevertheless, some questionable decisions by the referee allowed, to a certain extent, Real Madrid not only to get back in the match but also to build a colossal result in front of their demanding supporters.
Paco Jémez and his players were clearly devastated by both the result and the referee’s overall performance. At the end of the match, Rayo’s charismatic head coach reported that some of his players were crying in the locker room and he claimed that his team and football in general deserve more respect.
For next Wednesday’s complicated home match against Atlético Madrid, Paco Jémez will not be able to count on Raul Baena, Nacho Martinez and Tito, who are currently suspended, and on Tono, Cobeño and Patrick Ebert, who are still recovering from their respective injuries.
As for Atlético Madrid, after a fantastic undefeated run that extended for more than two months, the Colchoneros succumbed at the expense of Málaga in their last outing. A late goal by the Brazilian journeyman Charles granted the Andalusia team the three points and inflicted the third defeat of the season to Atlético Madrid.
The Colchoneros currently have the best defensive line in La Liga with just eight goals conceded in 16 matches so far and they have the exact same points of Barcelona, who are the current league leaders. The Catalan team, however, has one match in hand.
For next Wednesday’s travel to Vallecas, Diego Simeone will not be able to rely on the contribution of Felipe and Gabi, who are currently suspended. The Portuguese midfielder Tiago will also miss out there due to a long term injury.
