Next Monday, 4th of January 2016, an inconsistent Sporting de Gijón will take on Getafe at El Molinón in Asturias for the last match of Round 18 of Liga BBVA.
Things are far from easy for Abelardo Fernández and his Sporting de Gijón in their return to the first tier of Spanish football. The Asturian team has shown some quality football so far, but the lack of wins is certainly what worries Gijón’s supporters the most. With a young set of footballers, Sporting de Gijón failed to claw the three points from their visit to the Basque Country last time out. Abelardo’s men failed to counter SD Eibar’s strong start after the break and conceded two goals in just seven minutes. The Asturian team continues to display some problems in defence and has also failed to score a single goal in their last two matches. Abelardo needs to rally his troops for next Monday’s extremely important match against Getafe, because a win against the Azulones will allow them to change places with the Madrid outskirts’ team at the league team.
Sergio Alvarez, who is still undergoing treatment for a dislocated shoulder, will miss out there, while the experienced goalkeeper Iván Cuéllar is in doubt for the match due to a knee injury.
As for Getafe, it is a fact that the Azulones weren’t defeated in the last three league matches, but it is also true that they’ve failed to any of them. A 1-1 home draw against Real Sociedad, a spectacular 2-2 draw at Mestalla against Valencia and a goalless home draw with Deportivo de La Coruña was the best that Fran Escribá’s men managed to do in their last three outings. Last Wednesday, Getafe had plenty of opportunities to claw the three points against Depor, but in the end, they have failed to overcome an extremely inspired German Lux, who put up a vintage display.
For next Monday’s travel to Asturias, Fran Escribá will not be able to rely on the services of the versatile Spanish forward Angel Lafita, who is currently suspended. Emiliano Buendia and Álvaro Médran will also miss out there due to injury.
