Next Sunday, 6th of December 2015, UD Las Palmas will travel north to Asturias to measure forces with Sporting de Gijón at the emblematic El Molinón for Round 14 of the Spanish Liga BBVA.
After a superb performance at Mestalla two weeks ago, UD Las Palmas were surprised at home by Deportivo de La Coruña.The islanders had an apparent control of match with plenty more of ball possession but it were the visitors who had the best chances to score and ended up by claiming the three points. Despite their impressive ball possession percentage, UD Las Palmas only managed to create real danger to German Lux’s net through long shoots, most of them quite ineffective.
The islanders did, however, bounce back immediately after last weekend’s upset and managed to claw an important 2-1 win over Real Sociedad for the first-leg of the 1/16 finals of the Copa del Rey. The Basque team opened the score early in the match by the Portuguese international Bruma, but Quique Setién’s men managed to retaliate and ended up winning the clash thanks to goals from Asdrubal, still in the first-half, and from Hernan after the break. UD Las Palmas have changed for good after Quique Setién’s arrival back in October and they not only appear to be a more solid team, but they also display some attractive attacking every match regardless of who their opponents are.
For next weekend’s complicated travel to Asturias, the Santander born head coach will not be able to rely on the contribution of Wakaso, Lopez and Alcaraz, all of them currently sidelined due to injury.
As for Sporting de Gijón, the Asturian team are currently going through a very complicated period with just one win from their last five competitive matches. After overcoming Málaga at El Molinón early in November, Sporting Gijón have lost three league matches and the first-leg of the 1/16 finals of the Copa del Rey against Real Betis last Wednesday.
Life has been not easy for Abelardo’s men and a win over UD Las Palmas is almost mandatory if we bear in mind that the Asturian team is only two points above the relegation zone.
Canella and Sergio Alvarez are currently injured and they will likely miss out there.
