Next Friday, 22nd of January 2016, an extremely fragilized Sporting de Gijón will measure forces with Real Sociedad at the emblematic El Molinon for Round 21 of the Spanish Liga BBVA.

It was a nightmarish first-half for Sporting de Gijón at Santiago Bernabéu last Sunday’s afternoon. The Asturian team conceded five goals in the first 45 minutes and weren’t able to avoid their 12th defeat of the season. Sporting de Gijón are currently second from bottom with one game in hand, but the future does not look bright for Abelardo Fernández’s men. Next weekend’s match against Real Sociedad at El Molinon is of the utmost importance for them, especially after four consecutive defeats. The Asturian team last league win was more than one month ago against UD Las Palmas, but after that match, Sporting failed to collect a single point from the the other five matches in which they were involved.

For the upcoming difficult match against Real Sociedad, Abelardo will not be able to rely on the services of the centre back Bernardo, who is currently dealing with a long term injury and will miss the rest of the season. Juan Muniz with a sprained ankle is also in doubt for next Friday’s clash.

As for Real Sociedad, the Basque team extended their undefeated streak to three matches after last Saturday’s home draw against Deportivo de La Coruña at San Sebastian. The match against the Galician team wasn’t by any means an easy one and Eusebio Sacristán’s men have only managed to claw the equalizer late in the match. A second-half goal from the penalty spot by their captain Xabi Prieto allowed them to grab an important point that helped to increase their distance from the torments of the relegation zone.

For next Friday’s visit to Asturias, Eusebio Sacristán will not be able to count on Sergio Canales, who will miss the rest of the season due to injury, and on Imanol Agirretxe, who is still recovering from a sprained ankle.
