Next Sunday, 15th of May 2016, a Sporting de Gijón fishing for points will entertain Villarreal at the emblematic El Molinón on the last decisive match of Liga BBVA this season.
Last round’s draw at Coliseum Alfonso Pérez wasn’t enough for Sporting de Gijón to escape the relegation zone and the Asturian team no longer depend on themselves to claw a place in La Liga next season. Sporting de Gijón experienced struggled, especially during the first-half, to withstand Getafe’s attacking game, but have still managed to reach the break without conceding any goals. In the second-half, things didn’t change much, but it was the Asturian team that opened the score by Sergio Álvarez. The goal filled with hope the hearts of the hundreds of supporters who travelled to Madrid, but the red card shown to Nacho Cases a few minutes later complicated the things for them.
Getafe pulled rank and clawed the equalizer by Stefan Scepovic ten minutes before the end of the match and are now only depending on themselves to grant a place at La Liga next season.
The upcoming match against Villarreal is of paramount importance for Abelardo Fernández’s men and it is mandatory for them to claw the three points, in order to still maintain the dream of not being relegated for a bit longer. For that particular match, Abelardo will not be able to rely on the services of Nacho Cases, who is currently suspended. Bernardo and Dani Ndi will also miss out there due to injury.
As for Villarreal, the Comunidad Valenciana team fell short of expectations last weekend after losing to Deportivo de La Coruña at home by 2-0. The team’s overall poor performance was somewhat influenced by their midweek elimination from the UEFA Europa Cup at the expenses of Liverpool at Anfield Road. Marcelino Toral’s men failed to book a place in the tournament’s final once again and that fact has certainly took a toll in the team’s foundations.
For the upcoming visit to Asturias, Marcelino Toral is not yet certain if he will be able to rely on the services of Jaume Costa, who is still struggling with a muscle injury.
