Next Sunday, 17th of January 2016, the league leaders, Atlético Madrid, will travel to the Canary Islands to measure forces with UD Las Palmas at Estadio Gran Canaria for Round 20 of the Spanish Liga BBVA.
After last weekend’s important win at Los Balaídos against Celta de Vigo, Atlético Madrid extended their undefeated streak to five matches by overcoming Rayo Vallecano in the 1/8 finals of the Copa del Rey last Thursday’s night.
Following a 1-1 draw at Vallecas, Los Colchoneros showed no mercy on a somewhat fragilized Rayo Vallecano when both sides met last Thursday at Vicente Calderón. Atlético won the match by 3-0 with two goals from the usual suspect Antoine Griezmann and another one from the young talented Argentinean forward Ángel Correa.
Atlético are going through a splendid moment, but their next weekend’s match at Gran Canaria will certainly not be an easy one. The islanders are a fairly organized team when playing at home and Los Colchoneros have revealed some frailties in at least two of their last three matches away from Vicente Calderón.
Tiago, who is still recovering from a broken leg, and Fernando Torres, currently dealing with an ankle injury, will miss out there.
As for UD Las Palmas, it is fair to say that the islanders are a completely rejuvenated team after the arrival of Quique Setién back in October. The Santander born head coach has not only managed to change the team’s football DNA, but he also seemed to have brought with him the consistency Los Amarillos lacked earlier this season.
After holding Málaga to a draw last weekend, UD Las Palmas put up another spectacular performance to overcome SD Eibar in the 1/8 finals of the Copa del Rey. Two 3-2 home and away wins allowed UD Las Palmas to secure a place in the next stage of the competition.
For the upcoming clash against the league leaders of Atlético Madrid, Quique Setién will not be able to rely on the services of Hernan, Javi Castellano and Angel Lopez, all of them currently sidelined due to injury.
