Next Sunday, 8th of May 2016, a super motivated Atlético Madrid will visit the Comunidad Valenciana to measure forces with Levante at Estadi Ciutat de Valencia for Round 37 of the Spanish Liga BBVA.
Atlético Madrid have secured a place in the UEFA Champions Final for the second time in three years after eliminating the all-powerful Bayern Munich at Germany in the middle of the week. Los Manzanares were defeated by 2-1 but eliminated the German champions on away goals. A second-half goal by Antoine Griezmann was enough for Diego Simeone’s team to book a place in the San Siro final that will take place at the end of this month.
Besides having secured a place in the UEFA Champions League final, Atlético Madrid are, together with Barcelona and Real Madrid, in the final battle for the Spanish Liga BBVA title. Los Colchoneros are currently on the second place of the table with the exact same points of Barcelona after 36 matches. With just two rounds to go, both teams cannot allow any more slip ups otherwise they will lose the champions title for their closest contender.
The upcoming clash against Levante is of the utmost importance for Atlético that have won their last six league matches. With the home side already relegated to Liga Adelante (Spanish second division) Los Colchoneros will certainly need to pull ranks in order to claw the three points against an opponent that little or nothing to lose. For that particular match, Diego Simeone, who will be on the stands due to suspension, will have all the players at disposal, although, the Portuguese midfielder Tiago, will probably not take part in the match, since he have only recently returned from a long term injury.
As for Levante, the Comunidad Valenciana based team are the first side to be relegated from Liga BBVA this season after last weekend’s defeat against Málaga at La Rosaleda.
Two goals in the dying moments of the match have condemned Levante to relegation. It wasn’t by any means the best of matches for the Granotes, who have still managed to grab the equalizer before half-time by Morales. After the break, nevertheless, the home side piled on the pressure up front and managed to score two goals, the first one by Duje Cop and another one, a few minutes later, by Chory Castro.
For the upcoming match against Los Colchoneros next weekend, Levante’s manager Rubi, will not be able to rely on the services of José Mari, who is currently suspended.
