Next Sunday, 8th of May 2016, a Deportivo de La Coruña fishing for points will visit El Madrigal to measure forces with Villarreal for Round 37 of the Spanish Liga BBVA.
Deportivo de La Coruña are not yet safe from being relegated and last weekend’s defeat against their closest contenders of Getafe at Riazor constituted a huge blow to the team’s already fragile motivation levels. Depor started the match at full steam, but failed to overcome Getafe’s goalkeeper Vicente Guaita, who put up an almost vintage performance at Riazor last Sunday. The Galician team’s back line struggled to contain the visitors quick attacking movements and allowed Pedro León to open the score near the break, a goal that jeopardized Depor’s strategy for the rest of the match.
Things got even more complicated for the home side, when the Costa Rican defensive midfielder Celso Borges was sent off on minute 64’ leaving Deportivo with just 10 men until the end of the match. Depor have only won one of their last 20 league matches and they will surely struggle to pull up a positive result from their visit to El Madrigal next Sunday. For that particular match, Victor Sánchez will not be able to rely on the services of Celso Borges and Fernando Navarro, who are both currently suspended. Argentinean goalkeeper German Lux will also miss out there due to injury.
As for Villarreal, after overcoming Liverpool at El Madrigal during the first-leg of the UEFA Europa League semi-finals in the middle of the week, the Submarino Amarillo showed no mercy on their neighbours of Valencia on last weekend’s local derby. One goal by Samuel and another one by Adrian López allowed Villarreal to return to winning ways at La Liga after three matches without a single win.
Following last weekend’s win, Villarreal granted a placed in the UEFA Champions League playoff stage next term as they are now six points clear from Athletic Bilbao, with just two matches until the end of the season.
For the upcoming match against Depor, Marcelino Toral will not be able to rely on the services of Léo Baptistão, who remains sidelined due to injury.
Before next Sunday’s clash, Villarreal will travel to Anfield Road to play the second-leg of UEFA Europa League semi-finals against Liverpool on Thursday.
