Arsene Wenger will be pleased with the reaction of his side after being knocked out by Sheffield Wednesday comprehensively in the last-16 of the Capital One Cup that would’ve dented his pride. He won’t have been particularly too concerned at being knocked out of the competition but the performances of some of his senior players in the defeat will. They were back to their fluent best at Swansea with a 3-0 victory that included 3 second half goals from Olivier Giroud, Laurent Koscielny and Joel Campbell. The victory ensured they kept with the pace of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table although City needed a late penalty to secure a win over Norwich which would’ve been the only dampener on proceedings for Wenger. Despite coming 2nd best on passes completed and possession against Swansea, Arsenal were ruthless when the chances fell their way unlike Swansea who missed a guilt edge chance when Bafetimbi Gomis dwelt on the ball when clean through on Petr Cech’s goal.

Tottenham were in action Monday night against managerless Aston Villa and had no problem seeing off Remi Garde’s imminent-to-be side after taking the lead in under 3 minutes. They went on to win 3-1 with Harry Kane finishing off a brilliant team goal in the dying minutes to secure the win. Tottenham have lost just once and that was on the opening day of the season to Manchester United and Mauricio Pochettino’s side were unfortunate to do so. Pochettino will be hoping Kane can start producing the form that saw him score 31 goals in all competitions last season and after a slow start to this campaign he now has 4 goals in his last 2 games. Victory over Villa saw Tottenham climb into 5th but were 2nd best for the majority of the second half and allowed Aston Villa back in the game when they conceded late on and their opponents almost equalised following Hugo Lloris’s rush of blood to come for a cross.

The North-London derby at the Emirates in the Premier League hasn’t been particularly successful for Tottenham. Just 1 win in 22 attempts doesn’t bode well with the Tottenham supporters and the players will need to put in a better performance if they want to maintain their 10 game unbeaten run in the league. Arsenal have lost just 2 Premier League games at the Emirates in the past 18 and have conceded just 9 goals in that run. Fitness levels could play a part with Tottenham playing Monday night and then Thursday night in the Europa League, Arsenal could well have fresher legs for the North-London derby.

Arsenal’s injury problems are mounting up and it seems every year they sustain a number of injuries that takes a toll on their title challenge. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott are the latest to join the treatment table after picking up injuries against Sheffield Wednesday. Ryan Mason returned from injury to play a cameo role in midfield against Aston Villa whilst Federico Fazio was also on the bench.
