Next Saturday, 8th of August 2015, the current English champions Chelsea will measure forces with the usually complicated Swansea at Stamford Bridge for Round 1 of the English Premier League.
José Mourinho wasn’t certainly expecting to be defeated in the first official trophy of the new season, but the truth is that some of, let’s say, complacency he showed during the week before the match apparently backfired.
Chelsea had more ball possession throughout the match and had, in a way, more attempts on goal than Arsenal, but the Gunners were who had the best chances to score and, if it wasn’t for Thibaut Courtois’ quality performance, the match’s final score would have certainly been different.
The Blues apparently missed their sharpshooter Diego Costa, who remains sidelined due to injury, since not even Loic Remy nor the newcomer Radamel Falcao proved to be good enough to erase the Brazilian-born Spanish international’s usual effective performances up in the front from the supporters’ minds.
Last season, Chelsea did very good in both matches against the Swans, scoring no more no less than nine goals and securing the six points that were at stake. The new season opening matches tend to be complicated and, for that reason, José Mourinho’s men need to put up a solid performance in order to avoid any major upset.
As for Swansea, the Welsh team had a good overall performance last season finishing in the 8th place of the EPL table, with 56 points from 38 matches, just four points behind Southampton, who snatched the last place that offered European football this term.
The Swans have only won one match during the pre-season, but on the other hand, they have not been defeated in any of the five fixtures they’ve taken part in.
The new arrivals, Andre Ayew and the Portuguese international forward Éder, will probably be of good use to Garry Monk this season, especially the Ghanaian player, who will certainly add some more quality to the team.
