Next Sunday, 9th of August 2015, the Community Shield holders Arsenal will go head-to-head with their neighbours and rivals of West Ham at the Emirates Stadium for Round 1 of the English Premier League.
Arsenal started the new season in great style by winning the 14th FA Community Shield of their history and at the same time by overcoming their arch rivals, Chelsea, on a match that above all else was a “direct” confrontation between Arsene Wenger and José Mourinho.
The Gunners put up a very solid performance against Chelsea last Sunday and it is fair to say that they fully deserved to win the match. They netted in an early goal, on the 24th minute by Oxlade Chamberlain, and had the best chances to score throughout the entire match, especially in the second-half, where Thibaut Courtois delayed their celebrations with two or three top class saves.
Arsenal showed some quality attacking moments throughout the match and the newcomer Petr Cech has proved already that he is a major asset for their defensive line consistency.
The Gunners’ recent record against West Ham is fairly impressive. In the last three home matches with the Hammers, Arsenal scored no more no less than 11 goals and conceded only two.
Jack Wilshere, Tomas Rosicky and Danny Welbeck will most certainly miss the match due to injury.
As for West Ham, the last days of Spring marked the end of Sam Allardyce’s stewardship at the helm of the team and a few days later the Hammers announced their new skipper, the former Croatian defender, Slaven Bilic.
The former Everton’s centre back has a Herculean task on his hands and so far the team’s performances, especially in the UEFA Europa League playoff matches, have been everything but impressive. The home 2-2 draw with FC Astra Giurgiu might have compromised their presence in the next stage of the competition, as they need to snatch a positive result from their visit to Romania next Thursday in order to advance from the third qualifying round. The outcome of this particular match will certainly influence West Ham’s next weekend’s performance at the Emirates Stadium.
