Next Saturday, 8th of August 2015, the three-time European champions Manchester United will measure forces with Tottenham at Old Trafford for round 1 of the English Premier League.

After another disappointing performance last season, the Red Devils have no more room for errors this term and  to start the new campaign off on the right foot is of the utmost importance, in order not to attract some of the ghosts from the last two seasons.

United’s recent home record against the Spurs is not particularly impressive as they have only won one of the last three times both sides went head-to-head. Last term, the Red Devils hammered their London opponents by 3-0 but in the previous two campaigns they were surprised at home by the The Lilywhites.

Manchester United spent big once again this summer but this time it is fair to admit that they have signed some excellent footballers that might in fact have a word to say in the team this season. Bastian Schweinsteiger will certainly offer more quality in the building process, while Morgan Schneiderlin will, on the other hand, surely be of the utmost importance for the team’s defensive organization. The irreverence of Dutch wonderboy Memphis Depay will also be a breath of fresh air in United’s attacking game because of his versatility up front.

United put up some top quality performances during the pre-season matches, something that has certainly left their supporters purring for more, but one must not forget that they have done the same last term and then ended up embarking on a disastrous season after.

As for Tottenham, the Spurs have, not by any means, spent big this summer and some might wonder if there is some sort of disinvestment in the team for the new season, after they have finished in the 5th place of the table last term.

After being defeated by the MLS All-Stars a few days ago, the Spurs will still play two more matches before the start of the new season, something that might not be the wisest decision, if one has in mind that the team will have a very important match in five days time.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men failed to overcome United at the Theatre of Dreams last term, but they will certainly hang to their recent positive record against the Red Devils to try to pull out something very special during next Saturday’s match.
