Jurgen Klopp’s first match in charge of Liverpool saw him make the trip to London against Tottenham. It was the start of a fine run away from home in the Premier League with victories over Chelsea and Manchester City soon to follow. Klopp’s side boast the 5th best away record in the Premier League and have picked up more points away from home this season. However, that doesn’t take into consideration Liverpool have played 16 games league games away compared to 13 at home. The fans will certainly have one eye on their Europa League quarter-final clash with Borussia Dortmund next Thursday. Although Dortmund was the least preferred team in the Europa League draw, if they can progress past the German side then they have a magnificent chance of going all the way to win the competition and qualify for the Champions League.
Tottenham were the side that Dortmund knocked out in the previous round of the Europa League but Mauricio Pochettino’s side bounced back in the league with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Bournemouth. A 15 minute brace from Harry Kane put the Spurs supporters at ease before the England centre forward set up Christian Eriksen in the 2nd half. Tottenham are 6 points clear of neighbours Arsenal in 2nd but also have a 5 point gap to close on league leaders Leicester. With just 7 games remaining Tottenham certainly can’t afford to drop many points. Tottenham also got back to winning ways away from home with a 2-0 win at basement side, Aston Villa. Kane scored another brace in that game and maintained their impressive form away from home where they’ve won 8, drew 5 and lost 2 in the league this season.
Harry Kane’s 5 goals in his past 3 league matches has seen him overtake Jamie Vardy as the Premier League’s top goal scorer. He now has 21 goals for the season and has become the first Tottenham player since Martin Chilvers to score 20+ Premier League goals in consecutive seasons. This is the department in which Liverpool have struggled in this season with the injuries sustained to Daniel Sturridge. Sturridge linked up with Harry Kane on international duty with England and Klopp will be hoping his star centre forward can gain some momentum in the business end of the season.
It could well rest on Sturridge as Klopp has injury doubts upfront with Christian Benteke, Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi all potentially unavailable. Other doubts in the Liverpool side through injury are Alberto Moreno and Lucas Leiva which may mean he has to use Nathaniel Clyne or Jon Flanagan on their least preferred side of defence. Jan Verthongen remains injured for Tottenham but his Belgian colleague Toby Alderweireld should return in central defence. Pochettino is unlikely to tinker with the side as he has done for the majority of the season with Tottenham’s focus now primarily on the Premier League.
